Biography

Sovran dedicates himself in both heart and soul to his job, carrying on his father’s legacy as Captain Commander of the Noble Guard within God’s Pledge, a national peacekeeping association founded to protect endangered “gods.” Even though the position has been relegated to little more than a ceremonial title (only requiring that he attend an occasional meeting and ensure the safety of their “Princess”) he’s known for expending outrageous amounts of energy on even the smallest of tasks. If it weren’t for his friendly personality, Sovran’s insane work ethic would probably intimidate or possibly appear as a threat to the other organization members. He’s actually a big goofball deep down, often poking fun at his friends and coworkers in a way that makes them smile and laugh a little more.

Prior to earning his position, Sovran had joined God’s Pledge at a young age, working alongside his father, Reynaud de Vaux, who previously headed the Noble Guard. It was considered a fairly safe line of work, and the young Sovran enjoyed patrolling the Pledge Hold with his father, hoping that one day he too would grow into a man of Reynaud’s caliber. These tranquil moments unfortunately did not last long, and an unexpected Remnant onslaught in the dead of night suddenly took the life of Sovran’s greatest hero.

Stricken by grief, Sovran turned his anger on the Pledge, blaming them for their carelessness and interest only in the greater good rather than its members as individuals. He soon left God’s Pledge to return home, where his mother constantly abused the money left in Reynaud’s will and likewise taught Sovran to do the same. Despite how little his mother mourned, the disillusioned Sovran rarely considered the ongoing problems within the NEU, instead indulging his newfound hedonism in a poor attempt to completely dissociate from his father.

The Remnant epidemic continued, unbidden, even in the face of the Peacekeepers’ best efforts, and eventually it circulated to the wealthiest areas, coating the streets in the Remnants’ customary ugliness. When ordered to evacuate, Sovran’s mother Liliane staunchly refused, preferring to live and die in luxury rather than huddle in a shelter with those she deemed below her station. Unable to reason with her prejudice, Sovran had a choice to make, either to align with his mother’s wishes or follow his own. He begged his mother constantly before leaving at the last possible moment, so late in the departure that he encountered a C-Gen Remnant on the streets.

The Remnant was quick to unleash its fury upon the first living thing it had likely seen all day, and Sovran used the only memento of his father in his possession to protect himself: the flintlock pistol, loaded with God’s Pledge theurgical bullets. His best attempts to deter the beast only served to foment its rage, and the Remnant managed to disarm Sovran of his weapon and nearly severed his head as well when a young Peacekeeper came to the rescue.

Bravely wielding a sword and all forms of complex Thaumaturgy, the Peacekeeper swiftly dispatched the Remnant and announced himself as Eon Harken, a member of the God’s Pledge Palatine Guard. Although dubious at first, Sovran praised the boy in earnest, and then explained to him that his mother still inhabited the danger zone. He decided to wait with Eon until backup arrived, simply so that he could receive an escort to the shelters, but his plans changed completely upon hearing cries of distress coming from the direction of his family home.

A flare was sent up to request assistance and Eon insisted that Sovran leave, only for him to proudly declare himself as the son of Reynaud de Vaux, former Captain Commander of the Noble Guard, and a God’s Pledge member in his own right. With no time to argue, the two of them rushed to aid Sovran’s mother, finding a horde of Remnants clambering up the walls of the De Vaux home and Liliane trapped on the roof. The ensuing fight proved more difficult than either Sovran or Eon could have expected, but with Sovran’s sharpshooting, Eon managed to cut through the front door and reach Sovran’s mother.

Lacking proper backup, Eon had no choice but to stall for time until other Peacekeepers arrived, deciding to focus on Liliane’s safety rather than his own. Assaulted by Remnants on all sides, Eon’s pace began to falter, and a stray Remnant slipped past him, intent on killing Liliane de Vaux. The following countermove made by Eon Harken successfully protected Liliane and deflected the Remnant, though Eon ended up gravely injured and barely able to stand. It was then that a squadron of Peacekeepers arrived, much to Sovran’s relief, and retrieved both Eon and Liliane.

Sovran visited Eon on a daily basis during the latter’s convalescence, forming a deeper bond with the boy as they discussed trifling matters and gossiped about other God’s Pledge members. He saw all the good that God’s Pledge had done for the people and started to realize the selfishness of his reasoning, knowing he had abandoned the cause his father cherished out of frustration rather than righteousness. It was after his mother disparaged Eon Harken, her own rescuer, and his “foolish sense of justice” that Sovran decided to resume his God’s Pledge work indefinitely, hoping to make up for as much lost time as possible.

Years later, Sovran rose to his father’s rank on merit alone. He left behind his life of carefree luxury and made a promise that he would uphold his father’s honor until the last breath. His dedication and drive inspired many within the organization–particularly Eon Harken, now the Count Palatine of God’s Pledge, with whom Sovran would share a loving relationship.

Alternate Universe (spoilers)
Samson Aster recognizes Sovran de Vaux as a Dead Ringer for Sachiel Zechariah Bain, Samson’s own surrogate brother, due to immense similarities in physical appearance, and even personality, although they are two separate entities without any relation. According to Samson, if it were possible for Sachiel to grow older, his face would have likely aged to match Sovran’s. Rather than being a human, Sachiel was one of many invulnerable superpowered beings known as Godtypes, having lived in an isolated clan that supported peace and cooperation with mankind.

Unfortunately, the Godtypes of this Earth viewed humanity as tainted and corrupt and actively encouraged extermination as a means to begin the world anew. Because Godtypes cannot be killed by normal means, the human population rapidly declined, its ultimate destruction only hindered by the interference of Sachiel’s clan, who somehow found a god-slaying mortal who’d defeat the other Godtypes with her sword alone.

This “savior” and Sachiel had grown close and eventually fell in love, but their fleeting romance ended in disaster when she slew him and the rest of his clan for reasons still unknown. The only survivor, Sachiel’s older brother, killed the savior out of hatred and vengeance, thereby extinguishing the world’s last chance at salvation

What disturbs Samson most is that Eon Harken, Sovran’s significant other, resembles the savior to such a degree that he categorizes them as Dead Ringers: people who share the same face across parallel worlds. Despite recognizing Eon as a different person and a very kindly man, Samson can’t help but feel unnerved by their relationship, seeing as the savior essentially killed one of Sovran’s incarnations.
