Remnants

REMNANTS

Known colloquially as “Rems”, the Remnants are an engineered sub-species first created by fusing the human body with a Godtype’s genetic material. Most worlds with Godtypes do not contain Remnants, since the process of creation requires what amounts to ritual sacrifice of divine beings.  It would require a cataclysmic event which threatened the Godtypes’ existence beforehand for mankind to enact such dire measures, hoping to create adequate replacements despite the cost.

The majority of Remnants were gifted miracle-makers looking for eternal life or greater power, but others were just unfortunate experiments used for perfecting the technique.  Regardless, the eventual process of degeneration essentially kills whatever human identity the original body held, and replaces it with a collective spirit of vengeance, fueled by the grudge of the sacrificial gods.

After the breakthrough surgery, completed Remnants attained their own form of bastardized Godtype ether production, but they struggled to realize the same miracles as their precursors, and thus were regarded more like demigods than the legitimate article.

Furthermore, degeneration causes the Rems to lose any semblance of divine power due to the influx of imperfect ether.  Driven only by rage, they lash out uncontrollably at gods and humans alike, while their absorptive properties make them especially dangerous to living beings in the immediate vicinity.

If the gods stand for creation, then the Rems are the opposite, seeking to destroy whatever their former selves built.  Due to being a product of a miracle, however heinous, only another miracle via Thaumaturgy can serve to disperse their bodies, and even then they do not die, possessing immense regenerative capacity from the will of the sacrifices.

Following total destruction, it only takes a matter of years for a Remnant to form again and continue its onslaught on humanity.  Lacking a permanent solution, both Godtypes and humans are forced to continue fighting a war of attrition, guarding their territory and seeking a means to be rid of the Rems for good.
